David pleads with the Lord not to rebuke him in His anger, nor chasten him in His hot displeasure, asking Him to have mercy, since he is weak, to heal him, since his bones are vexed, his soul also being sorely vexed, asking how long, O Lord, this distress must continue.
David asks the Lord to return and deliver his soul, to save him for His mercies’ sake, since in death there is no remembrance of Him, and in the grave who shall give Him thanks, describing how he is weary with his “groaning,” “anachah” in Hebrew, making his bed swim every night, watering his couch with his tears, his eye consumed because of grief, growing old because of all his enemies.
David commands all the workers of iniquity to depart from him, since the Lord has heard the voice of his weeping, has heard his supplication, and will receive his prayer, declaring that all his enemies shall be ashamed and sorely vexed, turning back and being ashamed suddenly, a psalm that moves through genuine, raw distress toward renewed confidence that God has indeed heard his desperate cry.
David’s honest description of weeping through sleepless nights, his bed literally swimming with tears, gives genuine permission for believers to express profound emotional and even physical distress openly before God rather than masking it. This psalm’s movement from raw anguish to renewed confidence shows that honest lament, rather than blocking genuine faith, can actually become the very pathway back toward it.
