The psalm opens asking why the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing, the kings of the earth setting themselves, and the rulers taking counsel together against the Lord and against His “anointed,” “mashiach” in Hebrew, saying, “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us,” a picture of persistent human rebellion against divine authority.
The psalmist describes God’s response from heaven, that He who sits in the heavens shall laugh, the Lord shall have them in derision, then speak to them in His wrath and vex them in His sore displeasure, declaring, “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion,” a King the psalmist describes as God’s own begotten Son, to whom the nations are given as an inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth as a possession, ruling them with a rod of iron, and dashing them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
The psalm closes urging kings to be wise, and be instructed, urging them to serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling, to kiss the Son, lest He be angry and they perish from the way, since His wrath can be kindled quickly, pronouncing blessed all those who put their trust in Him, a psalm that early Christians recognized as pointing forward to Christ, God’s anointed King who will ultimately triumph over every earthly rebellion.
This psalm’s vivid contrast between futile human rebellion and God’s calm, sovereign response, laughing from heaven at plots doomed to fail, offers real perspective on every generation’s persistent resistance to divine authority. Its messianic imagery, God’s own Son set as King over the nations, gives this ancient royal psalm enduring significance far beyond its original historical setting.
