The psalm opens declaring “blessed,” “esher” in Hebrew, is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night, a life deliberately shaped by ongoing separation from wicked influence and constant immersion in God’s word.
The psalmist compares such a person to a tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth fruit in its season, its leaf not withering, and whatever he does prospering, a picture of steady, rooted flourishing that comes from consistent nourishment rather than sudden, unsustainable growth.
In sharp contrast, the ungodly are described as chaff which the wind drives away, unable to stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous, since the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish, a fitting, foundational opening that sets the tone for the entire book of Psalms, contrasting the flourishing, rooted life of the righteous against the unstable, ultimately doomed path of the wicked.
