God asks Job whether he can draw out “leviathan,” “livyatan” in Hebrew, with a hook, or his tongue with a cord which he lets down, whether he can put a hook into his nose, or bore his jaw through with a thorn, whether he will make many supplications to Job, or speak soft words to him, whether he will make a covenant with him, or whether Job will take him as a servant forever.
God asks whether Job will play with him as with a bird, or bind him for his maidens, whether companions will make a banquet of him, or divide him among merchants, whether Job can fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears, warning that if Job lays his hand upon him, he will remember the battle and do so no more, since the hope of taking him is in vain, and even the sight of him casts a man down.
God describes leviathan’s terrifying features at length, his scales being his pride, shut up together as with a close seal, one so near to another that no air can come between them, joined together and cannot be sundered, his neesings flashing forth light, his eyes like the eyelids of the morning, out of his mouth burning lamps and sparks of fire leaping out, out of his nostrils going smoke as out of a seething pot, his breath kindling coals, and a flame going out of his mouth, strength remaining in his neck, sorrow being turned into joy before him, the flakes of his flesh joined together, firm in himself and immovable, his heart as firm as a stone, when he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid, he is a king over all the children of pride, a magnificent, terrifying description of untamed power designed to make Job’s own struggles feel appropriately small before God’s vastly greater dominion over such creatures.
This extended, vivid description of leviathan, a creature no human could ever hope to capture, tame, or fully understand, drives home the book’s culminating point, that if humans cannot even master a single fearsome creature, how much less could they fully comprehend or challenge the infinite Creator who made and rules over it. This final example completes God’s answer, not through direct explanation, but through overwhelming, humbling demonstration of His own limitless power and wisdom.
