God continues His questioning, now turning to the wild, untamed creatures of the earth. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Job 39.
God continues questioning Job, asking whether he knows the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth, or can mark when the hinds calve, whether he can number the months they fulfill, or know the time when they bring forth, bowing themselves and casting out their sorrows, their young ones becoming strong, growing up with corn, going forth and not returning to them.
God asks who sent out the wild donkey free, and loosed his bands, whose house He has made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings, scorning the multitude of the city, not regarding the crying of the driver, the range of the mountains being his pasture, searching after every green thing, asking whether the “unicorn,” “reem” in Hebrew, referring to a wild ox, will be willing to serve Job, or abide by his crib, whether he can bind him with a band in the furrow, or will he harrow the valleys after him.
God continues describing the ostrich, who leaves her eggs in the earth, forgetting that a foot may crush them, hardened against her young ones as though they were not hers, since God has deprived her of wisdom, yet when she lifts herself up on high, she scorns the horse and his rider, describing the horse’s incredible strength and courage in battle, mocking fear and not turning back from the sword, swallowing the ground with fierceness and rage, asking whether the hawk flies by Job’s wisdom and stretches her wings toward the south, whether the eagle mounts up at his command and makes her nest on high, dwelling and abiding on the rock, from there seeking her prey, her eyes beholding afar off, a magnificent tour through the untamed wild demonstrating God’s intimate involvement even in creatures entirely beyond human control or understanding.
God’s extended tour through wild, untamed animals, creatures completely beyond human control, domestication, or full understanding, humbles Job by showing that vast portions of creation operate entirely outside human management or comprehension. This chapter suggests that human limitation is not a flaw to be overcome, but simply an honest, appropriate recognition of finite creatures standing before their infinite, all-knowing Creator.
