So these three men cease answering Job, since he is righteous in his own eyes, but the wrath of Elihu, son of Barachel the Buzite, kindles against Job, because he justified himself rather than God, and his wrath also kindles against his three friends, because they had found no answer, yet still condemned Job.
Elihu had waited to speak until now because the others were older than he, but when he sees there is no answer in the mouth of these three men, his “wrath,” “aph” in Hebrew, is kindled, since he had waited for their words while they searched out what to say, but observes that great men are not always wise, nor do the aged always understand judgment, declaring he too will show his opinion.
Elihu explains he waited for their words and gave ear to their reasons, even until they searched out what to say, but none of them convinced Job or answered his words, so he too will answer his part and show his own opinion, since he is full of matter, and the spirit within him constrains him, his belly being as wine that has no vent, ready to burst like new bottles, explaining he will speak that he may be refreshed, and open his lips and answer, promising not to accept any man’s person, nor give flattering titles to anyone, since he does not know how to flatter, or his Maker would soon take him away, a fresh, energetic new voice entering the conversation just as the three older friends finally fall silent.
Elihu’s frustration with both Job and his three friends, refusing to simply align with either side of this exhausted debate, introduces a genuinely fresh perspective after so many rounds of increasingly repetitive argument. His willingness to wait respectfully for his elders to finish before finally speaking, despite his evident eagerness, models a kind of patient humility that nonetheless does not silence him indefinitely once he genuinely has something worthwhile to contribute.
