Job declares he made a covenant with his eyes, so why should he think upon a maid, asking what portion God has for him from above, and what inheritance from the Almighty on high, questioning whether destruction is not for the wicked, and a strange punishment for the workers of iniquity, since God sees his ways and counts all his steps. Job systematically denies a long list of possible sins, walking with vanity, his foot hastening to deceit, coveting his neighbor’s wife, having any deceit in his hand, his heart walking after his eyes, any spot cleaving to his hands, despising the cause of his manservant or maidservant, withholding the poor from their desire, causing the eyes of the widow to fail, eating his morsel alone without sharing with the fatherless, seeing anyone perish for want of clothing, lifting up his hand against the fatherless, making gold his hope, or “rejoicing,” “sameach” in Hebrew, because his wealth was great.
Job continues his sweeping oath, denying he rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated him, or lifted himself up when evil found him, allowing his mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul, denying the men of his tabernacle ever said they could not be satisfied with his meat, the stranger never lodging in the street since he opened his doors to the traveler, covering his transgressions as Adam by hiding his iniquity in his bosom, fearing a great multitude or the contempt of families that would keep him silent, closing by signing his own defense, wishing his adversary had written a book, that he might carry it upon his shoulder and bind it as a crown to him, declaring he would declare the number of his steps, and go near to Him as a prince, a comprehensive, sweeping oath of innocence bringing Job’s extended defense to its powerful, definitive conclusion.
Job’s exhaustive, systematic oath, covering nearly every conceivable sin from lust to greed to neglecting the vulnerable, represents one of Scripture’s most thorough self-examinations, offered not from arrogance but from genuine confidence in his own tested integrity. This sweeping final defense brings the human argument portion of the book to its climax, having thoroughly exhausted every angle, setting the stage for a voice greater than any human participant to finally, dramatically speak.
