Job reflects that surely there is a source for silver, and a place for gold where they refine it, iron taken out of the earth, and brass molten out of stone, man setting an end to darkness and searching out all perfection, the stones of darkness and the shadow of death, describing miners who dig deep beneath the earth, in places forgotten by travelers, far from human habitation, disturbing the very roots of mountains in their relentless pursuit of precious metal.
Job asks the central, haunting question of this chapter, “But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?” observing that man does not know its price, nor is it found in the land of the living, the depth saying it is not in him, and the sea saying it is not with him, unable to be gotten for gold, nor can silver be weighed for its “price,” “mechir” in Hebrew, unable to be valued with the gold of Ophir, precious onyx, or sapphire, exceeding rubies, and unable to be equaled with topaz or pure gold.
Job concludes that wisdom is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air, destruction and death saying they have heard only a rumor of it with their ears, but God understands its way, and He knows its place, for He looks to the ends of the earth and sees under the whole heaven, giving weight to the wind and weighing the waters by measure, making a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder, then did He see it, declare it, prepare it, and search it out. And unto man He said, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding,” a profound, climactic conclusion offering the one genuinely satisfying answer available amid so much unresolved human debate and questioning.
This chapter’s beautiful meditation on wisdom’s elusiveness, harder to find than any earthly treasure humans dig relentlessly to obtain, culminates in the profound realization that true wisdom ultimately consists simply in fearing the Lord and departing from evil. This surprisingly simple conclusion, following such an extended, complex philosophical search, suggests that genuine wisdom often lies not in fully understanding every mystery, but in humble, reverent submission before the One who does.
