Job responds sharply, asking how Bildad has helped him who has no power, and saved the arm that has no strength, how he has counseled one without wisdom, and plentifully declared the thing as it truly is, asking to whom he has uttered these words, and whose spirit came from him, a pointed rebuke suggesting Bildad’s brief speech offered nothing genuinely new or helpful.
Job then offers his own soaring description of God’s “power,” “gevurah” in Hebrew, describing dead things as formed from under the waters, and their inhabitants, hell being naked before Him, and destruction having no covering, stretching out the north over the empty place, and hanging the earth upon nothing, binding up the waters in His thick clouds, and the cloud not being torn under them, holding back the face of His throne, and spreading His cloud upon it.
Job continues describing God’s power over creation, having compassed the waters with bounds until day and night come to an end, the pillars of heaven trembling and being astonished at His reproof, dividing the sea with His power, and by His understanding smiting through the proud, His spirit having garnished the heavens, His hand having formed the crooked serpent, concluding remarkably that these are merely parts of His ways, and only a small whisper is heard of Him, but the thunder of His power, who can understand, a genuinely awestruck, poetic meditation that ironically surpasses anything his friends have offered throughout the entire preceding dialogue.
Job’s soaring description of God’s power over creation, even sharper and more theologically rich than anything his friends have managed to articulate, shows that his suffering has not diminished his genuine reverence and awe toward God. His closing observation, that even this magnificent description represents only a small whisper of God’s true power, humbly acknowledges that even his own impressive theological insight remains far from complete or fully adequate.
