Bildad responds with his brief, final speech, declaring that dominion and fear belong to God, who makes peace in His high places, asking whether there is any number to His armies, and upon whom His light does not arise.
Bildad asks how then man should be justified with God, or how he who is born of a woman could be “clean,” “zakah” in Hebrew, observing that even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in His sight, so how much less man, who is a worm, and the son of man, who is but a worm, a stark, humbling comparison meant to emphasize the vast, unbridgeable gap between finite, sinful humanity and the infinite holiness of God.
This brief speech, the shortest of the entire dialogue, marks essentially the end of the three friends’ argument, since Zophar offers no third response at all after this, their case having been thoroughly answered and, in many respects, exhausted by Job’s repeated, honest rebuttals throughout the preceding chapters, setting the stage for the dramatic shift about to unfold as the dialogue moves toward its climactic conclusion.
Bildad’s brief, almost exhausted final words, emphasizing only God’s vast majesty against humanity’s lowliness, suggest the three friends have essentially run out of new arguments after so many rounds of increasingly desperate accusation. This chapter’s brevity itself communicates something significant, that their theological framework, however elaborately defended earlier, ultimately had nothing further genuinely helpful left to offer Job in his continued, unresolved suffering.
