Job responds that even today his complaint is bitter, his stroke heavier than his groaning, wishing he knew where he might find God, that he might come even to His seat, ordering his cause before Him and filling his mouth with arguments, wanting to know the words God would answer him, and understand what He would say.
Job wonders whether God would plead against him with His great power, but believes instead He would put “strength,” “koach” in Hebrew, in him, since there the righteous might dispute with Him, and he would be delivered forever from his judge, yet laments that he goes forward but God is not there, and backward, but he cannot perceive Him, on the left hand where He works, but he cannot behold Him, He hides Himself on the right hand that he cannot see Him.
Job declares that God knows the way he takes, and when He has tried him, he shall come forth as gold, his foot having held to His steps, keeping His way and not declining, not going back from the commandment of His lips, esteeming the words of His mouth more than his necessary food, yet He is in one mind, and who can turn Him, and what His soul desires, that He does, performing the thing appointed for him, and many such things are with Him, which is why Job is troubled at His presence, considering, he is afraid of Him, since God makes his heart soft, and the Almighty troubles him, because he was not cut off before the darkness, nor has He covered the darkness from his face, closing this chapter with genuine confidence in his eventual vindication even amid continued, painful confusion about God’s present hiddenness.
Job’s confident declaration that he shall come forth as gold once tried offers a striking image of suffering as refinement rather than punishment, a perspective that will prove closer to this book’s actual resolution than any of his friends’ accusations. His honest admission of not being able to locate or perceive God, despite this confidence, shows that genuine faith can hold both trust in eventual vindication and honest confusion about present divine hiddenness simultaneously.
