Eliphaz makes his most specific, direct accusations yet against Job. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Job 22.
Eliphaz responds a final time, asking whether a man can be profitable to God, since he who is wise may be profitable to himself, questioning whether it is any pleasure to the Almighty that Job is righteous, or gain to Him that he makes his ways perfect, wondering whether God will reprove him for fear of him, or enter with him into judgment.
Eliphaz now levels specific, direct accusations against Job, claiming his “wickedness,” “ra” in Hebrew, is great and his iniquities infinite, that he has taken pledges from his brother for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing, that he has not given water to the weary to drink and withheld bread from the hungry, that the mighty man had the earth and the honorable man dwelt in it, that he has sent widows away empty and the arms of the fatherless have been broken, accusations with no basis in anything the text has actually shown about Job, but presented now as confident fact.
Eliphaz urges Job to acquaint himself with God and be at peace, so good would come to him, to receive the law from His mouth and lay up His words in his heart, and if he returns to the Almighty, he shall be built up, putting iniquity far from his tabernacles, laying up gold as dust, and the Almighty would then be his defense, and he would have plenty of silver, delighting himself in the Almighty and lifting up his face to God, making his prayer to Him, decreeing a thing that would be established, light shining upon his ways, humbling himself yet being lifted up, delivering even the one who is not innocent through the pureness of Job’s hands, an appeal that ironically ends up closer to true than Eliphaz realizes, though built entirely on false accusations against an innocent man.
Eliphaz’s escalation to specific, fabricated accusations, with absolutely no textual basis, reveals how thoroughly his rigid theology has blinded him to Job’s actual character and situation, forcing facts to fit his theory rather than adjusting his theory to fit reality. This troubling pattern warns against the danger of becoming so committed to a theological framework that genuine compassion and honest observation get sacrificed entirely to maintain it.
