Job responds sarcastically that no doubt his friends are the people, and wisdom will die with them, but he has understanding as well as they, and is not inferior to them, since who does not know such things as they have said, though he has become like one mocked by his neighbor, someone who called upon God and He answered him, though the just, upright man is now laughed to scorn.
Job observes that those at ease have contempt for misfortune, ready for those whose feet slip, noting that the tabernacles of robbers prosper, and those who provoke God are secure, into whose hand God brings abundantly, urging his friends to ask the beasts and they shall teach him, the fowls of the air, and they shall tell him, or speak to the earth, and it shall teach him, since who among all these does not know that the “hand,” “yad” in Hebrew, of the Lord has done this, in whose hand is the soul of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
Job describes God’s incomprehensible power at work throughout creation and human affairs, pouring contempt upon princes and weakening the strength of the mighty, discovering deep things out of darkness and bringing the shadow of death to light, increasing nations and destroying them, taking away understanding from the leaders of the earth, causing them to wander in a wilderness without a path, groping in the dark without light, staggering like a drunken man, a sweeping survey of God’s absolute sovereignty over kings, counselors, judges, and nations alike, demonstrating that Job’s theological understanding runs every bit as deep as his friends’ confident lectures.
Job’s sharp sarcasm, wisdom will die with you, exposes real frustration at being lectured with truths he already understands perfectly well, reminding readers that suffering does not automatically diminish someone’s genuine theological insight or intelligence. His sweeping survey of God’s sovereignty over nations and rulers shows Job grappling with profound truths about divine power even while still struggling honestly with his own personal, unresolved anguish.
