In the land of Uz lives a man named Job, “perfect,” “tam” in Hebrew, meaning blameless and upright, one who fears God and shuns evil, blessed with seven sons, three daughters, and enormous wealth in livestock and servants, the greatest man among all the people of the east. Job regularly offers burnt offerings for each of his children, in case they had sinned in their hearts, showing his consistent, careful devotion.
One day, when the sons of God present themselves before the Lord, Satan also comes among them, and the Lord asks if he has considered His servant Job, none like him in the earth, blameless, upright, fearing God, and shunning evil. Satan responds cynically that Job only serves God because of the hedge of protection and blessing around him, and challenges God to touch everything Job has, confident that Job would then curse Him to His face. The Lord permits Satan to touch everything Job possesses, though not Job himself.
In rapid, devastating succession, messengers arrive reporting that the Sabeans stole Job’s oxen and donkeys and killed his servants, fire from heaven consumed his sheep and more servants, Chaldeans stole his camels and killed more servants, and finally, a great wind collapsed the house where his children were feasting, killing all ten of them. Despite this overwhelming, catastrophic loss, Job arises, tears his robe, shaves his head, falls to the ground, and worships, declaring, “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” In all this, Job does not sin, nor charge God foolishly, a remarkable, immediate response that sets the stage for the extended struggle to follow.
Job’s immediate response to catastrophic loss, worship rather than accusation, establishes the towering standard of faith this entire book will wrestle with and test throughout its remaining chapters. His words, the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord, remain one of Scripture’s most quoted expressions of genuine faith holding firm even amid completely inexplicable, devastating suffering.
