On the third day, Esther puts on her royal apparel and stands in the inner court of the king’s house, and when the king sees her, she obtains “favour,” “chen” in Hebrew, in his sight, and he holds out the golden sceptre in his hand, allowing her to approach and touch it. The king asks what she wants, promising to give her even half the kingdom, and Esther responds simply by inviting the king and Haman to a banquet she has prepared that day.
At the banquet, the king again asks what Esther requests, repeating his promise of up to half the kingdom, but Esther merely asks that the king and Haman come to another banquet she will prepare the next day, promising to make her actual request known then. Haman leaves the banquet joyful and glad of heart, but when he sees Mordecai at the king’s gate, still refusing to stand or tremble before him, Haman is filled with indignation against Mordecai, though he restrains himself.
Haman goes home and calls together his friends and his wife Zeresh, boasting of his glory, riches, many children, and his promotion above the king’s princes, yet admits all this satisfies him nothing so long as he sees Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate. Zeresh and his friends suggest he build a gallows fifty cubits high, and speak to the king in the morning to have Mordecai hanged on it, so he could then go joyfully with the king to the banquet, advice that pleases Haman greatly, and he has the gallows built that very night.
Esther’s careful, patient strategy, delaying her actual request across two separate banquets, shows real wisdom in choosing the right moment rather than rushing her appeal. Haman’s confession that all his wealth and honor mean nothing while Mordecai remains unbowed reveals how thoroughly pride, left unchecked, can poison even genuine, substantial success into bitter dissatisfaction.
