After the king’s anger subsides, his servants suggest gathering fair young virgins from every province to the palace, so the king might choose whoever pleases him best as queen instead of Vashti. Among those gathered is Esther, whose Hebrew name is Hadassah, the daughter of Abihail, raised by her cousin Mordecai after her parents’ death, since she has neither father nor mother, and Mordecai brought her up as his own daughter.
When the king’s command is heard, Esther is brought to the palace, and she obtains “favour,” “chen” in Hebrew, in the sight of everyone who sees her, especially Hegai, who has charge of the women, quickly giving her the best place in the house of the women along with beauty preparations and seven maidens. Esther does not reveal her people or family, since Mordecai had charged her not to, and Mordecai walks daily before the court of the women’s house to learn how Esther fares.
When Esther’s turn comes to go in to the king, she requests nothing except what Hegai advises, and she obtains favor in the sight of everyone who beholds her. The king loves Esther above all the other women, and she obtains grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins, so he sets the royal crown upon her head and makes her queen instead of Vashti, holding a great feast in her honor. Meanwhile, Mordecai, sitting at the king’s gate, discovers a plot by two chamberlains to lay hands on the king, and reports it through Esther, resulting in the plotters being hanged, with the deed recorded in the book of the chronicles before the king, a small detail that will matter greatly later in the story.
Esther’s remarkable rise from an orphaned exile to queen of the Persian empire, achieved through quiet grace and wise counsel rather than manipulation, positions her providentially for the crisis about to unfold. Mordecai’s seemingly minor act of reporting the assassination plot, recorded almost in passing, will prove crucial later, a small reminder that no faithful act ever truly goes unnoticed or unused.
