In the days of Ahasuerus, who reigns over 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia, the king holds a lavish “feast,” “mishteh” in Hebrew, in Shushan the palace, displaying his kingdom’s riches and glory for a hundred eighty days, followed by a seven-day banquet for everyone in the palace, with wine served abundantly in golden vessels, each vessel different from the others.
Queen Vashti holds her own feast for the women in the royal house, and on the seventh day, when the king’s heart is merry with wine, he commands his seven chamberlains to bring Queen Vashti before him wearing her royal crown, to show the people and princes her beauty, since she is fair to look upon. However, Queen Vashti refuses to come at the king’s command, which makes the king very angry, and his wrath burns within him.
The king consults his wise men who know the times and law, and Memucan advises that Vashti has wronged not only the king but all the princes and people throughout every province, since this deed will become known to all women, causing them to despise their own husbands. Memucan counsels that a royal decree be issued, unchangeable, that Vashti come no more before the king, and that her royal position be given to another better than she, so that every woman would give honor to her husband throughout the kingdom. The king approves this counsel, sends letters throughout all his provinces, each written in its own script and language, and Vashti is removed from her royal position, setting the stage for a new queen to be chosen.
Vashti’s quiet refusal to be paraded before a drunken banquet crowd, though it costs her the throne, stands as a striking act of dignity within a court otherwise consumed with excess and display. This chapter’s dramatic upheaval, removing one queen from power entirely, sets in motion the exact chain of events that will eventually place Esther in position to save her people.
