On the twenty-fourth day, the children of Israel assemble with fasting, sackcloth, and earth upon them, separating themselves from all foreigners, standing and confessing their own sins and the iniquities of their fathers. They stand up and read from the book of the law of the Lord their God for a fourth part of the day, and for another fourth part, confess and worship the Lord their God, the Levites leading them in an extended, remarkable “confession,” “todah” in Hebrew, that recounts their entire national history.
This lengthy prayer recalls God as Creator, His choosing of Abraham, His deliverance from Egypt through the Red Sea, His provision in the wilderness with the pillar of cloud and fire, manna, and water, and His giving of the law at Sinai. It honestly recounts Israel’s repeated rebellion, from the golden calf to their refusal to enter the promised land, yet consistently emphasizes God’s manifold mercies, that He did not forsake them even in the wilderness, and eventually brought them into the good land He had promised.
The prayer continues honestly tracing centuries of further rebellion after entering the land, God’s repeated deliverance through judges when they cried out, and their eventual disobedience leading to exile at foreign hands, acknowledging that God has been just in everything that has happened to them, while they have done wickedly. The prayer closes with the people, based on all this honest history, entering into a sure covenant, written and sealed by their leaders, priests, and Levites, committing themselves anew to walk in God’s law, a fitting, sobering conclusion to this remarkable day of corporate confession and recommitment.
