Once the wall is finished and the doors set up, and porters, singers, and Levites appointed, Nehemiah gives his brother Hanani, along with Hananiah, ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem, since Hananiah is a faithful man and fears God above many others. Nehemiah instructs that the gates not be opened until the sun grows hot, and while still open, that watchers be appointed from among Jerusalem’s inhabitants, some at their designated posts, others near their own homes.
Nehemiah explains that the city is large and great, but the people within it are few, and the houses not yet built, so God puts it into his heart to gather the nobles, rulers, and people together for “registration,” “yachas” in Hebrew, finding a register of genealogy among those who first came up, which he then reproduces in detail, listing the children of the province who returned from captivity, organized carefully by family and clan.
The chapter records the total congregation at 42,360, besides servants and maids numbering 7,337, along with singing men and women, a substantial count of horses, mules, camels, and donkeys, largely mirroring the earlier list recorded in Ezra. Some family heads offer freely toward the work, contributing gold, silver, and priestly garments, and the priests, Levites, porters, singers, and the rest of Israel settle in their own cities, everyone finally established properly in their ancestral homeland with the city itself now properly secured and defended.
Nehemiah’s careful attention to security details, even after the wall’s dramatic completion, shows that finishing a major project is never the same as finishing the work of properly maintaining and protecting what was built. His deliberate effort to reconstruct the genealogical register demonstrates real care for preserving the community’s identity and proper order even amid the practical business of resettling an entire returned population.
