When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem, and their allies hear that Nehemiah has built the wall, leaving no breach, though the doors were not yet set up in the gates, they send repeatedly asking him to meet them in the plain of Ono, though Nehemiah recognizes this as a scheme to harm him, and responds each time that he is doing a great “work,” “melakah” in Hebrew, and cannot come down, since the work would cease while he leaves it to meet them.
After four such refused requests, Sanballat sends an open letter accusing Nehemiah of planning rebellion and intending to be king himself, threatening to report this to Artaxerxes unless they meet, but Nehemiah recognizes these accusations as entirely fabricated, sending back a firm denial and praying for strength. Shemaiah, hired to frighten Nehemiah, urges him to hide in the temple, claiming assassins are coming, but Nehemiah discerns this too as a trap meant to make him sin and give his enemies grounds for reproach, refusing to flee since as governor he has no business entering the temple’s restricted areas anyway.
Despite constant intimidation, letters, and even nobles of Judah corresponding secretly with Tobiah because of family connections, the wall is finished in fifty-two days, a remarkably swift accomplishment that causes their enemies to lose confidence, since all the surrounding nations perceive this work was accomplished by their God. This dramatic completion, achieved despite relentless external pressure and internal betrayal attempts, stands as a powerful testimony to determined, prayerful perseverance against seemingly overwhelming opposition.
Nehemiah’s consistent discernment throughout this chapter, recognizing four separate deceptive schemes for exactly what they were, shows real spiritual wisdom in staying focused on genuinely important work rather than being distracted or intimidated by clever manipulation. The wall’s swift completion in just fifty-two days, so remarkable that even hostile neighbors attributed it to God, validates every bit of the perseverance this project required.
