When Sanballat hears that the Jews are rebuilding the wall, he becomes furious and mocks them before his companions, asking mockingly whether these feeble Jews can really fortify themselves, revive stones from rubbish heaps, or finish in a single day, while Tobiah adds that even a fox climbing up would break down their stone wall. Nehemiah responds not with counter-mockery, but with prayer, asking God to hear how they are despised, and turn their reproach on their own heads, while the people continue building, the wall joined together to half its height, since the people have a mind to work. When Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, Ammonites, and Ashdodites hear that Jerusalem’s repairs continue and the breaches are being stopped, they conspire together to come fight against Jerusalem and create “confusion,” “mehumah” in Hebrew. Judah’s people grow discouraged, saying the strength of the laborers is decaying and there is much rubbish, so they cannot build the wall, while their adversaries plan a surprise attack. Nehemiah, hearing of this threat, sets a watch against them day and night, and after praying, sets people by families with swords, spears, and bows at the lowest, most exposed parts of the wall. Nehemiah encourages the nobles, rulers, and people not to be afraid, but to remember the Lord, great and terrible, and fight for their brothers, sons, daughters, wives, and houses. From that day forward, half the workers labor while the other half hold spears, shields, bows, and armor, with builders working with one hand while holding a weapon with the other, each having his sword girded even while building. Nehemiah keeps a trumpeter beside him to rally everyone quickly if attacked, and the people work from dawn until the stars appear, never removing their clothes, always ready to respond to any threat, a remarkable picture of determined perseverance under constant, genuine danger.
The builders working with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other captures perfectly what sustained faithfulness under real opposition actually looks like, not naive indifference to danger, but practical vigilance combined with continued determined progress. Nehemiah’s response to mockery and threats, prayer followed by practical preparation rather than either panic or reckless bravado, models genuinely wise leadership under real pressure.
