A Persian king issues a decree that finally sends God’s exiled people back home. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezra 1.
In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, the Lord stirs up his spirit to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah, and Cyrus issues a proclamation throughout his kingdom, declaring that the Lord God of heaven has charged him to build Him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Cyrus invites any of God’s people among his subjects to go up to Jerusalem and build this house, with those remaining behind encouraged to help with silver, gold, goods, and beasts, along with freewill offerings for God’s house.
The heads of the families of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites, whose spirit God stirs up, rise to go up and build the Lord’s house at Jerusalem. Everyone around them strengthens their hands with vessels of silver, gold, goods, beasts, and precious things, in addition to everything freely offered, and Cyrus himself brings out the vessels of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and put in his own god’s temple.
Cyrus numbers these “vessels,” “keli” in Hebrew, out under the treasurer Mithredath, who counts them out to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah, an inventory including thousands of gold and silver items, basins, knives, and bowls. All these vessels, five thousand four hundred in total, Sheshbazzar brings up along with the returning exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem, a dramatic, tangible sign that the long exile was finally, genuinely coming to its promised end.
Cyrus’s unexpected decree, coming from a pagan king rather than from within Israel itself, fulfills Jeremiah’s prophecy precisely and shows that God can move even foreign rulers to accomplish His purposes for His people. The careful return of the temple’s original vessels reinforces that this restoration wasn’t a fresh start from nothing, but a genuine continuation of what had been temporarily interrupted.
