Hezekiah sends word throughout all Israel and Judah, even to Ephraim and Manasseh in the northern kingdom, inviting everyone to come keep the “Passover,” “pesach” in Hebrew, to the Lord God of Israel at Jerusalem, since it had not been properly observed in a long time. Though many mock and laugh at the messengers, some from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun genuinely humble themselves and travel to Jerusalem anyway.
The assembled congregation agrees to keep the feast an additional seven days beyond the normal observance, since many priests had not yet sufficiently sanctified themselves and the people needed more time to gather. Because many attendees had not properly purified themselves according to the law, Hezekiah prays specifically for them, asking the good Lord to pardon everyone who prepares their heart to seek God, even if not perfectly cleansed according to the sanctuary’s ceremonial standard, and the Lord hears Hezekiah and heals the people.
The children of Israel present in Jerusalem keep the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness, while Levites and priests praise the Lord daily with loud instruments. The whole assembly then agrees to keep the feast seven additional days, offering abundant sacrifices, and “there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like.” The chapter closes with the priests blessing the people, their voice heard, and their prayer coming up to God’s holy dwelling place in heaven.
Hezekiah’s prayer asking God to pardon those who came with genuine, prepared hearts even without perfect ceremonial cleanliness reveals real spiritual wisdom, that God cares more about sincere devotion than technical procedural perfection. This joyful, unprecedented celebration shows what genuine, wholehearted worship can accomplish when leadership actively invites reconciliation rather than settling for continued division.
