Hezekiah becomes king and does what is right exactly as his ancestor David did, opening the doors of the Lord’s house in the very first month of his reign and repairing them. He gathers the priests and Levites, explaining that their fathers trespassed and did evil, forsaking the Lord and turning their backs on His dwelling place, closing the temple’s doors and putting out its lamps, resulting in God’s wrath falling on Judah and Jerusalem.
Hezekiah declares his intention to make a “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, with the Lord God of Israel, so His fierce anger might turn away from them. The Levites sanctify themselves and thoroughly cleanse the temple, removing every unclean thing they find, a process taking sixteen days total to complete properly.
Once the temple is cleansed, Hezekiah gathers the city’s officials and offers sin offerings for the kingdom, the sanctuary, and all Judah, with priests laying hands on the offerings and sprinkling their blood on the altar as atonement for all Israel. Levites accompany the burnt offerings with instruments David had established, singers and trumpeters joining together, and the entire assembly worships as the burnt offering is completed. Hezekiah and the people rejoice greatly at what God has prepared for them, “for the thing was done suddenly,” a swift, remarkable restoration of proper worship after his father’s devastating neglect.
Hezekiah’s immediate action in his very first month as king, rather than gradually easing into reform, shows real urgency about restoring what his father had so badly damaged. This swift restoration, completed suddenly rather than dragged out over years, demonstrates that genuine repentance and reform, once truly committed to, can happen remarkably quickly when leadership actually prioritizes it.
