Uzziah becomes king at sixteen and does what is right, seeking God during the days of Zechariah, who instructs him in the fear of God, and as long as he seeks the Lord, God makes him prosper. Uzziah wages successful wars against the Philistines, Arabians, and Ammonites, and builds towers in Jerusalem and the wilderness, digging wells for his abundant cattle, since he loves working the soil.
Uzziah builds an enormous, well-equipped army with innovative weapons and war machines designed by skilled craftsmen, and “his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.” However, once strong, his heart becomes lifted up “to his destruction,” and he acts unfaithfully against the Lord, entering the temple to burn incense on the altar, a duty reserved exclusively for consecrated priests.
Azariah the priest and eighty other courageous priests confront Uzziah, warning him this is not his role, and that it will bring him no honor from the Lord. Uzziah becomes furious, but even as he rages at them, “leprosy,” “tsara’ath” in Hebrew, rises up on his forehead immediately, and the priests thrust him out quickly, since he himself hastens to leave, having been struck by the Lord. Uzziah remains a leper until his death, living in isolation while his son Jotham governs the kingdom, a sobering, permanent consequence for overstepping the sacred boundaries God had clearly established.
Uzziah’s tragic downfall shows how success itself can become dangerous when it breeds the assumption that accomplishment earns the right to overstep God’s clearly established boundaries. His remarkable achievements throughout most of his reign couldn’t protect him from serious consequence once pride convinced him he could claim privileges reserved specifically for others.
