In the seventh year, Jehoiada the priest strengthens himself and makes a covenant with military commanders, gathering Levites and family heads from throughout Judah to Jerusalem. He shows them the king’s son, and they make a covenant with him in God’s house, and Jehoiada carefully organizes armed guards throughout the temple to protect young Joash during the public “coronation,” “hamlakah” in Hebrew.
They bring out the king’s son, place the crown on him, give him the testimony, and make him king, anointing him while everyone claps and shouts, “God save the king.” Athaliah, hearing the noise, rushes to the temple and cries “Treason, Treason,” but Jehoiada commands that she be taken outside rather than killed within the temple itself, and she is executed at the horse gate entrance to the king’s house.
Jehoiada makes a covenant between himself, the people, and the king, that they would be the Lord’s people, and the people tear down Baal’s temple, breaking its altars and images, killing Baal’s priest before the altars. Jehoiada establishes proper order over the Lord’s house according to the law of Moses, and appoints singers with instruments of music according to David’s arrangement, and the people rejoice, since the city is now quiet after Athaliah’s violent, illegitimate reign has finally ended.
Jehoiada’s careful, meticulous planning, securing military support and organizing protection before ever revealing the hidden young king, shows real wisdom in executing such a dangerous, high-stakes transition safely. This dramatic reversal, from a hidden infant to a publicly crowned king, demonstrates that God’s covenant promises to David’s line, though severely threatened, ultimately proved unbreakable.
