Ahaziah, Jehoram’s youngest son, becomes king since raiders had killed his older brothers, but he too walks in the wicked ways of Ahab’s house, influenced by his mother Athaliah’s wicked counsel. Ahaziah allies with his uncle Joram of Israel against Syria, and while visiting the wounded Joram, is present when Jehu carries out God’s judgment against Ahab’s entire house, and Ahaziah himself is captured and killed as well, since “the destruction of Ahaziah was of God” for his association with Ahab’s corrupt family.
When Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother, sees her son is dead, she rises up and destroys all the royal “seed,” “zera” in Hebrew, of the house of Judah, attempting to eliminate David’s entire royal line and seize the throne for herself. However, Jehoshabeath, Ahaziah’s sister, secretly rescues the infant Joash from among the king’s sons about to be killed, hiding him and his nurse in a bedchamber, and later within the temple itself for six years while Athaliah reigns illegitimately over the land.
This dramatic rescue preserves David’s promised dynasty during its most vulnerable moment, a single hidden infant standing between complete extinction and the continuation of God’s covenant promise, setting the stage for the dramatic reversal that will unfold once Joash is finally revealed and crowned in the chapter that follows.
