Jehoshaphat’s faithful legacy takes a dark turn under his own son’s violent, idolatrous reign. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Chronicles 21.
Jehoram succeeds his father Jehoshaphat and immediately kills all his own brothers with the sword, along with several princes of Israel, securing his throne through violence rather than legitimate succession. He marries Ahab’s daughter and walks in the wicked ways of Israel’s kings, doing evil in the Lord’s sight, yet God, for David’s sake, does not destroy the house of David entirely, having promised to give him and his descendants a lamp forever.
During Jehoram’s reign, Edom revolts against Judah’s control and sets up their own king, and Libnah revolts as well, since Jehoram had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers. Elijah sends Jehoram a “letter,” “sepher” in Hebrew, condemning his wicked ways, following neither his father Jehoshaphat’s nor grandfather Asa’s faithful example, but instead walking like Ahab’s corrupt house, even killing his own brothers who were better than he was, and predicting a devastating plague on his people, family, and possessions, along with a severe, incurable disease for Jehoram himself.
Exactly as prophesied, the Philistines and Arabians invade, carrying away Jehoram’s wives and sons except his youngest, Ahaziah. Afterward, the Lord strikes him with an incurable bowel disease, and after two years of agonizing suffering, his bowels fall out and he dies in great pain, with no one lamenting him, and he is buried without the honor typically given to Judah’s kings, a tragic, humiliating end to a reign marked by violence and idolatry from its very beginning.
Jehoram’s reign, beginning with the murder of his own brothers and ending in such painful, dishonored death, shows just how quickly one generation can squander faithfulness carefully built by their predecessors. Elijah’s written warning, arriving even after his own dramatic departure from earth, confirms that God’s prophetic word continued reaching Judah’s kings regardless of the messenger’s own circumstances.
