Moabites, Ammonites, and others come against Jehoshaphat for battle, and, afraid, he sets himself to seek the Lord, proclaiming a fast throughout Judah. Standing before the assembled congregation, Jehoshaphat prays publicly, acknowledging God’s power over every kingdom, recalling His faithfulness to Israel’s ancestors, and admitting honestly, “we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”
The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Jahaziel, a Levite, in the midst of the assembly, declaring, “Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s… ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you.” Jehoshaphat and all Judah bow with their faces to the ground, worshiping, and Levites stand up to praise the Lord with a very loud voice.
The next morning, Jehoshaphat appoints “singers,” “meshorerim” in Hebrew, to go out before the army, praising the Lord in the beauty of holiness, singing, “Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.” As they begin singing and praising, the Lord sets ambushes against the invading armies, causing them to turn on one another in confusion until they completely destroy each other, leaving Judah nothing to do but gather the abundant spoil, taking three days to collect it all, before returning to Jerusalem with joy to worship at the temple, since the fear of God had fallen on all the surrounding kingdoms.
Jehoshaphat’s remarkable strategy, sending singers ahead of the army rather than soldiers, reflects complete confidence that this battle genuinely belonged to God rather than human military strength. This victory, won entirely through worship and trust rather than a single sword being drawn, stands as one of Chronicles’ most vivid illustrations of what genuine reliance on God can accomplish.
