Jehoshaphat, having great riches and honor, joins in marriage alliance with Ahab, and visits him in Samaria, where Ahab persuades him to join forces in recapturing Ramothgilead from Syria. Jehoshaphat wisely asks to inquire of the Lord first, and Ahab gathers four hundred prophets who unanimously predict victory, but Jehoshaphat senses something is missing, asking if there is not another prophet of the Lord to inquire of as well.
Ahab reluctantly summons Micaiah, admitting he hates him “for he never prophesied good unto me, but always evil.” Micaiah initially mocks Ahab sarcastically with false encouragement, but when pressed for the truth, describes a vision of Israel scattered like sheep without a shepherd, and explains that God allowed a lying “spirit,” “ruach” in Hebrew, to entice Ahab’s prophets specifically to lure him toward coming disaster. Furious, Zedekiah, one of the false prophets, strikes Micaiah, who is imprisoned on reduced rations until Ahab safely returns.
Ahab disguises himself for battle, hoping to avoid being targeted, urging Jehoshaphat to wear his own royal robes instead, which nearly gets Jehoshaphat killed when Syrian soldiers mistake him for Ahab, until he cries out and the Lord helps him, and they realize their mistake. A Syrian archer, shooting randomly, strikes Ahab between the joints of his armor anyway, and he bleeds to death by evening, exactly fulfilling Micaiah’s earlier prophecy despite every precaution Ahab had taken to avoid it.
Jehoshaphat’s alliance with Ahab, despite his own personal faithfulness, nearly cost him his life simply through association with someone under God’s judgment. This uncomfortable close call serves as a sobering warning throughout the rest of Chronicles about the real dangers even a genuinely godly leader faces when forming compromising partnerships with those actively opposing God.
