The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Book of the law” it comes from the Hebrew Word “sepher torah” which means “book of the law.”
A new king actively sends teachers throughout his kingdom to instruct the people in God’s law. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Chronicles 17.
Jehoshaphat succeeds his father Asa and strengthens himself against Israel, positioning forces throughout Judah’s fortified cities. The Lord is with Jehoshaphat because he walks in the earlier ways of his father David, seeking the God of his father and walking in His commandments rather than following Israel’s corrupt practices, so his heart is lifted up in the ways of the Lord, and he removes the remaining high places and groves throughout Judah.
In his third year, Jehoshaphat sends princes, accompanied by Levites and priests, throughout all the cities of Judah, carrying “the book of the law,” “sepher torah” in Hebrew, teaching the people directly, a remarkable, proactive commitment to spreading genuine knowledge of God’s word throughout his entire kingdom rather than leaving it confined to Jerusalem alone.
The fear of the Lord falls on all the surrounding kingdoms because of this faithfulness, so that none of them dare make war against Jehoshaphat, and some Philistines and Arabians even bring him tribute and gifts voluntarily. Jehoshaphat grows increasingly great, building fortresses and store cities throughout Judah, and maintains an enormous, well-organized military force stationed throughout Jerusalem and his fortified cities, a kingdom marked by genuine peace, prosperity, and faithful worship during this period.
Jehoshaphat’s deliberate initiative to send teachers throughout his kingdom, ensuring ordinary people actually understood God’s law rather than assuming they would somehow learn it passively, reflects real, proactive spiritual leadership. This intentional investment in genuine biblical education helps explain the surrounding nations’ respect and the kingdom’s overall stability during his faithful reign.
