Rehoboam assembles a massive army of 180,000 chosen warriors to fight against Israel and recover the kingdom, but the prophet Shemaiah delivers God’s word, forbidding them to fight against their own brothers, since this division has come from the Lord Himself. Rehoboam and the people obey this word and return home rather than pursuing civil war.
Rehoboam builds and fortifies numerous cities throughout Judah, strengthening them with commanders, supplies, and weapons, securing Judah and Benjamin’s remaining territory. Remarkably, priests and Levites throughout Israel, seeing Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them from serving as priests to the Lord, leave their possessions and territories in the northern kingdom entirely and relocate to Judah and Jerusalem, strengthening Rehoboam’s kingdom for three years, walking faithfully in the ways of David and Solomon during this period.
The chapter closes describing Rehoboam’s “family,” “mishpachah” in Hebrew, his eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters, noting that he loved Maachah, Absalom’s daughter, above all his other wives, and dealt wisely in dispersing his sons throughout Judah’s fortified cities, providing generously for them while making Abijah, Maachah’s son, his intended successor.
Rehoboam’s willingness to obey the prophet’s warning and avoid unnecessary civil war, despite having the military strength to attempt reclaiming the northern tribes, shows real restraint learned from his earlier foolish mistake. The faithful priests and Levites relocating to Judah reveal that genuine devotion to proper worship still mattered enough for people to sacrifice their homes and livelihoods.
