The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Counsel” it comes from the Hebrew Word “etsah” which means “counsel, advice.”
A young king’s foolish advice splits Israel into two nations that will never fully reunite. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Chronicles 10.
Rehoboam travels to Shechem, where all Israel gathers to make him king, and Jeroboam leads the people in asking Rehoboam to lighten the heavy burden Solomon had placed on them, promising to serve him faithfully in return. Rehoboam consults the elders who served his father, who advise him to speak kindly and serve the people, ensuring their lasting loyalty, but he instead consults the young men he grew up with, who advise responding with even greater harshness.
Rehoboam follows this foolish “counsel,” “etsah” in Hebrew, declaring his little finger will be thicker than his father’s waist, and that while his father chastised them with whips, he will chastise them with scorpions. The text explains this turn of events came from God, to fulfill His word spoken through Ahijah to Jeroboam concerning the kingdom’s coming division.
Israel responds by rejecting Rehoboam’s rule entirely, declaring they have no portion in David’s house, and the kingdom divides, with only Judah remaining loyal to Rehoboam while the other ten tribes make Jeroboam their king instead. When Rehoboam sends his tribute collector to the northern tribes, the people stone him to death, and Rehoboam himself barely escapes back to Jerusalem, a stark, immediate confirmation of just how thoroughly and violently this division has actually taken hold.
Rehoboam’s decision to reject wise, experienced counsel in favor of his peers’ harsh bravado permanently split what David and Solomon had spent decades building into one unified kingdom. Chronicles makes clear this division ultimately fulfilled God’s own sovereign purpose, even while Rehoboam’s foolish pride remained the immediate, human cause of this lasting catastrophe.
