Solomon determines to build a house for the name of the Lord and a royal house for himself, and conscripts an enormous workforce of laborers and stonecutters. He sends word to Huram, king of Tyre, requesting skilled craftsmen and cedar, fir, and algum trees from Lebanon, explaining that the house he intends to build will be great, “for great is our God above all gods,” yet acknowledging that even the heaven of heavens cannot truly contain Him.
Solomon specifically requests a man skilled to work in gold, silver, brass, iron, purple, and crimson, one who understands engraving, to work alongside the skilled craftsmen his father David had already provided. Huram responds warmly, blessing the Lord God of Israel for giving David such a wise son, “endued with prudence and understanding,” and agrees to send Huramabi, a master craftsman, along with the requested timber, floated by sea to wherever Solomon designates.
Solomon supplies enormous quantities of wheat, barley, wine, and “oil,” “shemen” in Hebrew, as payment for Huram’s workers, and organizes a massive labor force from among the foreigners living in Israel’s land, seventy thousand to bear burdens, eighty thousand as stonecutters in the mountains, and thirty-six hundred overseers to direct the work, careful preparation befitting the magnitude of the project about to begin.
Solomon’s careful, extensive preparation before construction even begins, securing skilled craftsmen and reliable materials from a genuinely cooperative foreign partnership, shows real wisdom in undertaking such a massive project properly rather than rushing ahead unprepared. Building something meant to honor God deserved this same level of thoughtful, deliberate care.
