Solomon strengthens himself in his kingdom as the Lord his God is with him, and magnifies him exceedingly. He gathers all Israel’s leaders and travels to Gibeon, where the tabernacle of the congregation still stands, along with the bronze altar Bezaleel had made, to offer a thousand burnt offerings there before the Lord.
That night, God appears to Solomon, saying, “Ask what I shall give thee.” Solomon responds with genuine humility, acknowledging the great mercy shown to his father David, and describing himself as inexperienced, “a little child,” asking God for “wisdom,” “chokmah” in Hebrew, and knowledge to judge this great people, since who else could judge such a numerous nation.
This request pleases God, who grants Solomon wisdom and knowledge exceeding anyone before or after him, and, because he did not ask for riches, wealth, honor, the life of his enemies, or long life, God adds riches, wealth, and honor as well, promising no king before him had such things nor would any king after him. Solomon returns to Jerusalem, and his wealth grows so extraordinary that silver and gold become as common as stones, and he acquires enormous numbers of horses and chariots from Egypt and surrounding regions.
Solomon’s request for wisdom rather than wealth or power at the very outset of his reign reveals genuine understanding of what real leadership actually requires. Chronicles highlights this moment specifically to establish the theological pattern that will run throughout the entire book, that seeking God first brings blessing that mere ambition alone could never secure.
