In his final act as king, David gives generously toward the temple, then passes the throne to his son. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Chronicles 29.
David tells the assembly that beyond his earlier preparations, he now gives his own personal treasure of gold and silver toward the temple out of his own devotion to God’s house, and asks who else is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today. The leaders of Israel’s families, officers, and officials respond with extraordinary generosity, giving willingly and rejoicing greatly, and David himself rejoices with great joy, blessing the Lord before the entire assembly.
David prays a magnificent public prayer, acknowledging that everything they have given ultimately came from God’s own hand in the first place. “All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee… for all is thine.” He asks God to keep this generous willingness forever in the hearts of His people, and to give Solomon a perfect heart to keep His commandments and build the palace he has prepared for.
David charges the entire assembly to bless the Lord, and they worship together, offering abundant sacrifices the next day, and make Solomon king a second time, “anointing,” “mashach” in Hebrew, him before the Lord to be ruler, and Zadok to be priest. All Israel obeys Solomon, and the chapter closes summarizing David’s entire forty-year reign, seven years in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem, before he dies “in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour,” succeeded peacefully by his son Solomon.
David’s closing prayer, acknowledging that everything given, even their most generous offerings, ultimately came from God’s own hand first, provides a fitting final word for this entire book’s emphasis on grateful, wholehearted worship. His peaceful, honored death, transitioning smoothly to Solomon’s reign, closes Chronicles’ account of Israel’s greatest king on a note of genuine fulfillment and hope.
