David assembles all the princes, officials, and leaders of Israel, and addresses them directly, explaining that it was in his own heart to build a house of rest for the ark of God’s covenant, and he had made preparations to do so, but God told him plainly that he could not build it, since he had been a man of war and had shed blood, though He promised that his son Solomon would build this house instead.
David publicly charges Solomon in front of the entire assembly, urging him to know the God of his father and serve Him with a “perfect,” “shalem” in Hebrew, meaning whole or complete, heart and a willing mind, since the Lord searches every heart and understands every thought. He warns Solomon that if he seeks God, he will be found, but if he forsakes Him, God will cast him off forever, urging him to consider carefully, since the Lord has chosen him to build this sanctuary.
David then gives Solomon the detailed pattern for the temple, given to him by the Spirit, describing the porch, its buildings, treasuries, upper chambers, and every furnishing down to the weight of gold and silver required for each vessel, explaining that all of this was written by the Lord’s own hand, making him understand it in detail. David encourages Solomon to be strong and of good courage and to do the work, “fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
David’s public charge to Solomon, delivered before the entire nation rather than privately, established both accountability and clear expectation for this enormous undertaking. His emphasis on serving God with a whole, willing heart, rather than mere outward performance, reveals what David understood mattered most for genuine, lasting faithfulness.
