Satan stands up against Israel and provokes David to number the people, and though Joab questions why this should bring guilt upon Israel, David insists, and the census reveals over one million fighting men throughout Israel and Judah. This displeases God, and David’s conscience troubles him deeply afterward, confessing that he has sinned greatly and done very foolishly in this matter.
God sends the prophet Gad to offer David a choice of three punishments, three years of famine, three months fleeing before his enemies, or three days of “plague,” “dever” in Hebrew, throughout the land. David chooses the plague, reasoning it is better to fall into the hand of the Lord, whose mercies are great, than into the hand of man. A devastating plague strikes, killing seventy thousand people, and as the destroying angel stretches out his hand toward Jerusalem, the Lord relents, commanding him to stay his hand at the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
David sees the angel and pleads with God to let judgment fall on himself rather than the innocent people. Gad instructs David to build an altar on Ornan’s threshingfloor, and though Ornan offers to give David everything freely, David insists on paying full price, declaring famously that he will not offer to the Lord burnt offerings that cost him nothing. David purchases the site, builds the altar, and offers sacrifices, and fire comes down from heaven to consume the offering, confirming this exact location as the future site of Solomon’s temple.
David’s insistence on paying full price for an offering he could have received freely reveals something essential about genuine worship, that true sacrifice requires real personal cost rather than convenient generosity from someone else’s resources. This principle, established at the very site where God’s temple would eventually stand, still speaks to what authentic devotion actually looks like.
