David extends his kingdom’s borders through a series of decisive military campaigns. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Chronicles 18.
David defeats the Philistines and subdues them, along with Moab, who become his servants bringing tribute. He defeats Hadarezer, king of Zobah, capturing chariots and horsemen, and when the Syrians of Damascus come to help Hadarezer, David defeats them too, putting garrisons throughout Syria, which also becomes his servants bringing tribute, “and the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.”
David dedicates the gold shields and enormous quantities of bronze taken from Hadarezer’s cities to the Lord, along with silver and gold from all the nations he subdues, Edom, Moab, Ammon, the Philistines, and Amalek. When the king of Hamath hears of David’s victory over Hadarezer, he sends his own son with vessels of gold, silver, and bronze, which David likewise dedicates entirely to the Lord rather than keeping for himself.
David also strikes down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, putting garrisons throughout Edom as well. The chapter closes summarizing David’s “justice,” “mishpat” in Hebrew, and righteous administration over all Israel, listing his key officials, Joab over the army, Jehoshaphat as recorder, Zadok and Abimelech as priests, and Benaiah over the Cherethites and Pelethites, with David’s own sons serving as chief officials at the king’s side.
David’s consistent practice of dedicating the spoils of his victories to the Lord, rather than simply accumulating personal wealth, shows a king who recognized his military success ultimately belonged to God rather than his own strategic brilliance. Even at the height of his growing power, David kept redirecting credit back to its true source.
