David offers burnt offerings and peace offerings before God, blesses the people in the Lord’s name, and distributes bread, meat, and wine to every person in Israel. He appoints Asaph and his fellow Levites to minister continually before the ark with music and “thanksgiving,” “todah” in Hebrew, delivering a psalm of praise into their hands that combines material found in several of the biblical Psalms.
This song calls Israel to give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name, and make known His deeds among the nations, remembering His covenant forever, the word He commanded to a thousand generations, the covenant made with Abraham and confirmed to Jacob as an everlasting covenant. It calls all the earth to sing to the Lord, declaring His glory among the nations, since “the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised,” while the gods of other peoples are merely idols, though the Lord Himself made the heavens.
David appoints Asaph and his brothers to minister continually before the ark in Jerusalem, while Zadok and other priests continue offering burnt offerings at the tabernacle still standing at Gibeon, since the ark and the tabernacle remain temporarily in two separate locations at this point. The chapter closes with the people responding “Amen” and praising the Lord, before everyone returns to their own homes, and David returns to bless his own household as well.
David’s psalm of thanksgiving weaves together gratitude, remembrance of God’s covenant faithfulness, and a call for all nations to recognize God’s greatness, not just Israel alone. This song shows worship functioning as both celebration and proclamation, Israel’s private joy meant to become a public testimony reaching far beyond their own borders.
