The chapter records the descendants of Reuben, noting that although he was Israel’s firstborn, his “birthright,” “bekorah” in Hebrew, was given instead to the sons of Joseph, because Reuben defiled his father’s bed, though the genealogical record itself, tracing his lineage rather than his leadership, was still preserved. The chapter records Reuben’s, Gad’s, and half of Manasseh’s combined military strength and their successful war against the Hagarites, crediting their victory directly to crying out to God in battle and trusting Him, “because they put their trust in him.”
The chapter provides extensive detail about these eastern tribes’ territory, their livestock, and their genealogical records maintained carefully during the reigns of Jotham and Jeroboam. However, the chapter also notes their eventual unfaithfulness, going after the gods of the peoples God had destroyed before them, until God stirs up the spirit of Assyria’s king to carry Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh away into captivity, a fate they experienced generations before the rest of Israel and Judah eventually would as well.
The chapter closes by tracing Levi’s priestly line briefly as well, mentioning Aaron’s descendants and Zadok specifically, setting up the more extensive treatment of Levi’s genealogy that follows immediately in the next chapter, since this tribe’s specific responsibility for temple worship required especially careful documentation throughout the rest of Chronicles.
Reuben’s lost birthright, despite his genealogical record still being carefully preserved, shows that failure carries real, lasting consequences even when someone’s place in the family story continues. The eastern tribes’ eventual exile, coming earlier than the rest of Israel’s, serves as a sobering early preview of exactly where persistent unfaithfulness ultimately leads.
