Hezekiah becomes deathly ill, and Isaiah delivers a sobering message that he should set his house in order, for he will die and not recover. Hezekiah turns his face to the wall and weeps bitterly, praying that God would remember how he walked before Him in truth and with a perfect heart, doing what was good in His sight. Before Isaiah has even left the middle courtyard, God sends him back with a different message, that He has heard Hezekiah’s prayer and seen his tears, and will heal him, adding fifteen years to his life and delivering the city from Assyria for David’s sake.
Isaiah instructs that a lump of figs be applied to Hezekiah’s boil, and he recovers. As a confirming “sign,” “oth” in Hebrew, Hezekiah asks whether the sun’s shadow should go forward or backward ten degrees on the sundial, and Isaiah has him choose the harder option, the shadow moving backward, which happens exactly as requested, a remarkable, publicly visible miracle confirming God’s promise.
Sometime later, envoys from the king of Babylon visit Hezekiah, bringing gifts because they heard of his illness and recovery. Flattered by their attention, Hezekiah foolishly shows them everything in his treasury, armory, and storehouses, holding nothing back. Isaiah confronts him afterward, prophesying that everything Hezekiah has shown them, along with some of his own descendants, will one day be carried away to Babylon. Hezekiah responds with troubling self-focus, simply relieved that peace and security will last during his own remaining lifetime, unconcerned about the coming judgment awaiting future generations.
Hezekiah’s genuine, tearful prayer for healing was answered dramatically, yet his later prideful display of wealth to foreign envoys planted seeds for future disaster his own generation would never witness. This chapter is a sobering reminder that personal faithfulness in one moment doesn’t automatically prevent poor judgment from creating serious consequences down the road.
