Hoshea becomes Israel’s final king, and though he does evil, not as severely as previous kings, Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, eventually besieges and captures Samaria after a three-year siege, carrying Israel away captive to Assyria, resettling them in various distant regions, “galah” in Hebrew describing this exile and uncovering of the land.
Scripture pauses to explain in detail exactly why this devastating judgment finally came, that Israel sinned against the Lord who had brought them out of Egypt, walking in the statutes of the nations God had driven out before them, secretly doing things not right against the Lord, building high places, worshiping idols, serving Baal, even causing their children to pass through fire, using divination and enchantments, rejecting every warning sent through God’s prophets over many generations, “hardening their necks like the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.”
The king of Assyria resettles foreign peoples in Israel’s now-empty territory, and when lions begin killing some of these new inhabitants, they are told this happens because they do not know the manner of the God of that land, so an exiled Israelite priest is sent back to teach them how to fear the Lord. The resulting religion becomes a troubling blend, fearing the Lord while still serving their own foreign gods, a compromised, syncretistic practice that continues “unto this day,” setting the stage for centuries of tension between Israel proper and the mixed Samaritan population that would eventually develop from this resettlement.
This chapter’s extensive explanation for Israel’s fall reads almost like a formal legal indictment, methodically documenting generations of accumulated unfaithfulness before finally pronouncing the sentence already carried out. God’s judgment here was never sudden or arbitrary. It came only after centuries of patient warning that Israel consistently, persistently refused to heed.
