Azariah, also called Uzziah, reigns fifty-two years in Judah, doing what is right, though the Lord strikes him with “leprosy,” “tsara’ath” in Hebrew, for the remainder of his life, requiring his son Jotham to oversee the palace and govern the people while he lives separately. Meanwhile, Israel’s throne changes hands with alarming, violent frequency, Zachariah reigns only six months before being assassinated by Shallum, who himself reigns just one month before being killed by Menahem.
Menahem rules harshly, even ripping open pregnant women in a conquered city, and pays tribute to Pul, king of Assyria, to secure his own throne, marking Assyria’s ominous first direct involvement in Israel’s affairs. His son Pekahiah succeeds him but is assassinated by his own captain Pekah after only two years. Pekah reigns twenty years, but during his time, Tiglathpileser, king of Assyria, invades and captures significant Israelite territory, carrying the people captive to Assyria, an early, devastating preview of the coming exile.
Pekah himself is eventually assassinated by Hoshea, who becomes Israel’s final king. Meanwhile in Judah, Jotham reigns well, doing what is right as his father Azariah had, though the high places remain, and during his reign, God begins sending Syria and Israel against Judah as an early sign of coming judgment for the nation’s persistent unfaithfulness across generations.
The rapid, violent turnover of kings in Israel during this chapter, several assassinated within months of taking the throne, reflects a kingdom in genuine political and spiritual chaos. Assyria’s first appearance as a tribute-collecting power here marks the ominous beginning of a threat that will soon consume the entire northern kingdom completely.
