The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Zeal” it comes from the Hebrew Word “qin’ah” which means “zeal, jealousy.”
Jehu systematically eliminates every trace of Ahab’s family and Baal worship from Israel. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Kings 10.
Jehu sends letters to Samaria’s officials, challenging them to choose a successor from Ahab’s seventy remaining sons and fight for the throne if they truly support that family. Terrified, they instead choose to submit entirely to Jehu, sending him the heads of all seventy sons, which Jehu displays in two heaps at the city gate, publicly declaring that God’s complete word against Ahab’s house has now been fulfilled exactly as spoken through Elijah.
Jehu continues his purge, killing forty-two relatives of Ahaziah found traveling nearby, and then encountering Jehonadab, a man devoted to the Lord, invites him to witness his “zeal,” “qin’ah” in Hebrew, for the Lord’s cause. Jehu then devises a clever deception, gathering all of Baal’s prophets and worshipers under the pretense of a great sacrifice to Baal, then, once they are all assembled inside Baal’s temple, has his guards slaughter every one of them, destroying the temple and its images completely, effectively eliminating organized Baal worship from Israel.
Despite this thorough purge of Ahab’s house and Baal worship, Jehu fails to remove the golden calves Jeroboam had established at Bethel and Dan generations earlier, continuing this alternative, compromised form of worship regardless. God commends Jehu for executing judgment on Ahab’s house exactly as He had commanded, promising his descendants will sit on Israel’s throne for four generations, yet notes that Jehu still did not depart from Jeroboam’s sins with all his heart. Jehu reigns twenty-eight years before dying, succeeded by his son Jehoahaz.
Jehu’s zealous, thorough destruction of Ahab’s house and Baal worship shows real commitment to God’s specific commands, yet his failure to address Jeroboam’s golden calves reveals the limits of that zeal. Partial obedience, even when dramatically thorough in one area, still fell short of the complete faithfulness God ultimately desired from Israel’s kings.
