Elisha sends a young prophet to privately “anoint,” “mashach” in Hebrew, Jehu, a military commander, as king over Israel, instructing him to flee immediately afterward. The prophet delivers this message and declares that Jehu will strike down the entire house of Ahab, avenging the blood of God’s prophets and servants shed by Jezebel. When Jehu’s fellow officers learn what happened, they immediately support him, spreading garments beneath him and blowing trumpets to declare, “Jehu is king.”
Jehu drives his chariot furiously toward Jezreel, and when Joram, Ahab’s son now reigning as king, rides out to meet him, Jehu draws his bow and kills him with an arrow through the heart, throwing his body onto Naboth’s very field in direct fulfillment of Elijah’s earlier prophecy. Ahaziah, king of Judah, fleeing the scene, is also pursued and mortally wounded by Jehu’s men.
Jezebel, hearing of these events, paints her face and adorns her hair, taunting Jehu from a window as he arrives, but Jehu calls out for anyone loyal to him to throw her down, and her own eunuchs comply, her blood splattering the wall and horses as they trample her. When Jehu later orders her burial, they find nothing left but her skull, feet, and the palms of her hands, exactly fulfilling Elijah’s earlier prophecy that dogs would devour Jezebel’s flesh in the field of Jezreel.
Every gruesome detail of Jehu’s violent rise fulfills prophecies spoken years earlier by Elijah, showing that even long-delayed judgment against Ahab and Jezebel’s house had never actually been forgotten by God. This chapter demonstrates that spoken prophetic word, however much time passes, ultimately comes to pass exactly as declared.
