As the day approaches for the Lord to take Elijah up by a “whirlwind,” “se’arah” in Hebrew, into heaven, Elijah repeatedly tells Elisha to stay behind at each stop of their journey, from Gilgal to Bethel to Jericho to the Jordan, but Elisha refuses each time, insisting he will not leave him. Companies of prophets at each location ask Elisha if he knows his master will be taken from him that day, and he silently acknowledges it each time.
At the Jordan, Elijah strikes the water with his rolled-up mantle, and it parts so they can cross on dry ground. Elijah asks Elisha what he wants before being taken away, and Elisha asks for a double portion of his spirit. Elijah responds that this is a hard thing, but if Elisha sees him when he is taken up, it will be granted. As they walk and talk, a chariot and horses of fire suddenly appear, separating them, and Elijah goes up by a whirlwind into heaven, while Elisha watches and cries out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof,” then tears his own clothes in grief.
Elisha picks up Elijah’s fallen mantle and strikes the Jordan’s waters just as his mentor had done, and they part for him too, confirming that Elijah’s spirit now rests on him. The watching prophets bow before him, recognizing his new authority. Elisha heals Jericho’s contaminated water source by casting salt into the spring, and later, when young men from Bethel mock him for his baldness, two bears come out of the woods and maul forty-two of them, a sobering consequence for their disrespect toward God’s newly established prophet.
Elisha’s persistent refusal to leave his mentor’s side, even when repeatedly told to stay behind, reflects the kind of committed devotion that positioned him to actually receive the double portion he requested. Sometimes genuine spiritual inheritance requires exactly this kind of stubborn, sustained presence rather than convenient, occasional attention.
