After Ahab’s death, Moab rebels against Israel, and King Ahaziah falls through a lattice in his upper chamber, becoming seriously injured. Rather than inquiring of the Lord, he sends messengers to consult Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, about whether he will recover. Elijah intercepts these messengers, sending them back with a pointed question, whether it is because there is no God in Israel that Ahaziah seeks a foreign god, and pronounces that he will surely die from this injury.
When the messengers report this back, Ahaziah recognizes the description as Elijah and sends a captain with fifty men to bring him in. The captain arrogantly commands Elijah to come down, and “fire,” “esh” in Hebrew, comes down from heaven and consumes him and his fifty men. A second captain meets the same fate. A third captain, however, approaches humbly, falling on his knees and pleading for his life and his men’s lives, and an angel instructs Elijah to go with him without fear.
Elijah delivers the same message directly to Ahaziah’s face, that because he sought Baalzebub rather than the God of Israel, he will surely die, and he does, exactly as prophesied. Since he has no son, his brother Jehoram succeeds him as king of Israel.
The contrast between the first two arrogant captains and the third humble one shows that approaching God’s messenger with respect rather than demanding compliance made all the difference in the outcome. Ahaziah’s fatal mistake wasn’t the injury itself, but seeking answers from a foreign god while completely ignoring the true God available to him all along.
