Elijah the Tishbite declares to Ahab that there will be neither dew nor rain for years except by his word. God instructs Elijah to hide by the brook Cherith, where ravens miraculously “provide,” “kul” in Hebrew, bread and meat for him morning and evening, and he drinks from the brook until it eventually dries up because of the drought.
God then sends Elijah to Zarephath, where a widow gathering sticks agrees to prepare him a small cake from her last handful of meal and little oil, expecting it to be her and her son’s final meal before starvation. Elijah promises that if she does this first, her barrel of meal will not waste, nor her cruse of oil fail, until the day the Lord sends rain again, and it happens exactly as promised, the meal and oil sustaining all three of them throughout the entire remaining drought.
Sometime later, the widow’s son becomes deathly ill and stops breathing entirely. Devastated, she confronts Elijah, wondering if he has come to remind her of her sin and bring about her son’s death. Elijah takes the boy, cries out to the Lord, and stretches himself over the child three times, pleading for his life to return, and God hears his prayer, restoring the boy’s life. Elijah brings the living child back to his overjoyed mother, who declares, “Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.”
God’s provision for Elijah came through remarkably unlikely sources, wild ravens and a desperately poor foreign widow, rather than through comfortable, obvious means. This chapter shows that God’s care often arrives through the most unexpected channels, and that genuine faith sometimes requires giving generously even when our own resources feel dangerously insufficient.
