The prophet Jehu pronounces judgment against Baasha for following Jeroboam’s sinful example and “provoking,” “ka’as” in Hebrew, the Lord to anger, predicting his house will be consumed exactly as Jeroboam’s was. Baasha’s son Elah succeeds him but is assassinated by Zimri while drunk, who then kills every remaining member of Baasha’s household. Zimri reigns only seven days before Omri, Israel’s military commander, besieges him, and Zimri, seeing his cause is lost, burns the king’s house down around himself.
A brief civil war follows between Omri and Tibni before Omri emerges victorious, becoming sole king. Omri builds the city of Samaria as Israel’s new capital, but does even more evil than all the kings before him. His son Ahab succeeds him and surpasses even Omri’s wickedness, marrying Jezebel, daughter of the Sidonian king, and serving and worshiping Baal, building him a temple and altar in Samaria, doing more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger “than all the kings of Israel that were before him.”
The chapter closes noting that during Ahab’s reign, a man named Hiel rebuilds Jericho, losing his firstborn son when he lays its foundation and his youngest son when he sets up its gates, exactly fulfilling Joshua’s ancient curse pronounced centuries earlier against anyone who would rebuild that city, a sobering reminder that God’s word, even spoken generations before, remains completely reliable.
This chapter’s rapid succession of violent, short-lived kings in the northern kingdom shows just how unstable and morally chaotic Israel had become after abandoning genuine covenant faithfulness. Ahab’s marriage to Jezebel marks a decisive turning point, introducing an aggressive, organized idolatry that would dominate the following chapters of Israel’s story.
